Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

The Sacred Heart of Jesus represents the very center of Divine Love made flesh — a symbol of tenderness, sacrifice, and compassion for each one of us.

“Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus reveals above all the infinite love of God for each of us, His children.”

The Origin and Greatness of This Devotion

Although devotion to the Heart of Christ has roots in the Middle Ages, it gained major prominence in the 17th century through the revelations received by Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque in Paray-le-Monial, France. The shrine at Paray describes three major apparitions between late 1673 and June 1675, in which Jesus revealed His Heart and called the faithful to spread this message of love and reparation.

Saint John Eudes helped promote early liturgical devotion to the Sacred Heart, and the feast was later extended to the universal Church by Pope Pius IX in 1856. In the 20th century, Pope Pius XII further emphasized its importance in the 1956 encyclical Haurietis Aquas, entirely dedicated to devotion to the Sacred Heart.

This devotion remains deeply alive in the Church today. In the United States, for example, the USCCB’s 2026 liturgical calendar places the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus on June 12, 2026, showing how central this feast continues to be in Catholic life.

The 12 Promises of the Sacred Heart

During these revelations, Jesus expressed His sorrow over humanity’s indifference and ingratitude toward His love. Saint Margaret Mary recorded His invitation to trust in His Heart and to respond with love, prayer, and reparation.

For those devoted to His Sacred Heart, tradition associates 12 promises with this devotion:

  • I will give them all the graces necessary for their state in life.

  • I will establish peace in their homes.

  • I will comfort them in all their afflictions.

  • I will be their secure refuge during life, and above all in death.

  • I will bestow abundant blessings upon all their undertakings.

  • Sinners will find in My Heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy.

  • Lukewarm souls shall become fervent.

  • Fervent souls shall quickly rise to great perfection.

  • I will bless every place in which an image of My Heart is exposed and honored.

  • I will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts.

  • Those who spread this devotion will have their names written in My Heart.

  • To those who receive Holy Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays, I will grant the grace of final perseverance.

Devotional Practices

From Saint Margaret Mary’s visions came several practices that remain central to this devotion:

  • The Nine First Fridays — receiving Holy Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays in reparation to the Sacred Heart

  • Holy Hour — spending time in adoration and prayer before Jesus

  • Enthronement or display of the Sacred Heart image in the home

  • Acts of reparation, especially on First Fridays

The Solemnity of the Sacred Heart is celebrated each year on the Friday after Corpus Christi, which is why its calendar date changes from year to year.

How to Live This Devotion Today

If you want to grow in devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, here are a few practical ways to begin:

  • Pay attention to the Church’s liturgical calendar and celebrate the feast with intention

  • Place an image of the Sacred Heart in your home

  • Begin the Nine First Fridays with prayer, confession, and Holy Communion

  • Participate in Holy Hours and Eucharistic adoration

  • Reflect on the 12 promises and ask the Lord how He is working in your life

  • Pray for priests, especially on the World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests, which is observed on the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart and was established by Saint John Paul II in 2002.

To live this devotion is to honor all that Christ has done for us — above all, His total gift of Himself in the Holy Eucharist. Through prayer, adoration, gratitude, and reparation, we draw closer to the Heart that loves us without measure.

If our Lord gave everything for us, then devotion to His Sacred Heart is more than a tradition — it is a response of love.
